Geisha Filing Taxes

It’s tax time for me so I’ll be going through the laborious task of getting everything together so I’ve decided to document what has to be done.First, you need to get your tax slips in order and create a detailed expense sheet outlining everything you spent over the course of the year.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you will be billed for the previous year, so if you make a lot of money and don’t think you’ll make as much the next year, put some ‘tax’ money aside to get you through the next year.

Here’s the breakdown:

Tax Slips:

Every company that you have worked for will send you a small white piece of paper called the ‘withholding tax slip’ (gen-sen-cho-shu-hyo – 源泉徴収票) that you need to show the tax office during tax time.  These usually come at the end of December or the beginning of January.  I work for four companies so I have:

2 x kyuuyo (Earned Salary Income)
2 x shuunyuu (Income amount – not salary)

Expense Sheet:

Because I have income that is not salary I can claim the following:

- Computer Stationary
- Dry Cleaning
- Motor Bike Repairs
- Train
- Fuel
- Taxi
- Dinning
- Attire
- Misc
- Cell Phone
- Office Space  (My Home)
- Health Insurance

* You can also claim a lot more.  I’d claim for anything and everything you bought over the year and put it down in an excel sheet.  The worst they can do is say no.

Take all this information down to your local tax office and they will fill out the forms for you. Trying to find your tax office might be a bit of a pain.  The links below are all in Japanese but they are the main government tax links that all Japanese use during tax time.  Good luck!
